The approximately 12-year Gotthard Tunnel maintenance project comprises five overarching construction phases during which traffic through the tunnel is to be kept flowing at all times. Rapp and its partners advise FEDRO on all scientific, technical and strategic issues and are responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of transportation projects.
Initial situation
The Gotthard road tunnel is getting on in years and needs extensive repairs. The Federal Roads Office FEDRO is building a second tube so that the important road link can remain open during the renovation. It is expected to be in operation from 2030. The first tube will then be repaired. Both tunnels will then be available from 2033. Only one lane per direction will be open at any one time, so traffic capacity through the Gotthard will not be increased.
Order
The Gotthard Tunnel maintenance project is one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects in Switzerland and Europe. The tunnel construction and renovation project, which will take around 12 years, comprises five overarching construction phases during which traffic through the Gotthard Tunnel is to be kept running at all times. A traffic operation concept was drawn up for each of the construction phases, some of which will last several years. Each concept describes the traffic flow in normal operation, incident operation (e.g. breakdown, accident, fire), operation under minimum requirements (e.g. failure of operating and safety equipment) and maintenance operation (e.g. construction and maintenance measures) in text and graphic form. The overall dossier, consisting of a technical report and a comprehensive catalog of traffic scenarios, is an important part of the overall maintenance project and is always kept up to date in the event of changes to the construction phase.
In this project, Rapp and its partners are advising FEDRO on all scientific, technical and strategic issues in their role as project author for transportation. In this role, we are responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of transportation projects. His main tasks include developing traffic concepts, collaborating with various authorities and specialist departments, managing and monitoring project implementation, preparing reports and ensuring quality and risk management. Erik Schaarschmidt is responsible for Rapp in this project as deputy project manager and project team member.
