Göschenen exit extension

Measures are being taken at various points to avoid traffic jams at the portal of the Gotthard road tunnel. Among other things, Rapp has advised on and planned the traffic-related implementation of the Göschenen exit extension.

Initial situation

Due to the very high traffic volumes on the A2, congestion situations with considerable tailbacks regularly occur at the portal of the Gotthard road tunnel. Many road users try to avoid this congestion by taking the cantonal road that runs parallel to the highway. This leads to severe obstructions on the cantonal road for local traffic, but above all for emergency vehicles and public transport.

Order

Due to the initial situation described above, measures are being taken at various points to avoid traffic jams. The focus is particularly on the junctions between national and cantonal roads. Rapp supports the Federal Roads Office FEDRO together with the specialist departments of the Civil Engineering Office of the Canton of Uri, the Uri Cantonal Police and the FEDRO Traffic Management Center in the development, preparation and implementation of these measures as part of several projects in the Uri Oberland.

One of the measures was the Göschenen exit extension. By dynamically converting the existing emergency lane in the Wassen - Göschenen section, the lane to the exit in Göschenen will be extended. Especially in the event of congestion in front of the Gotthard tunnel, the exit extension should make it easier to reach the Göschenen junction. The aim of the measure is to ensure that traffic leaving the Göschenen junction to drive over the Gotthard Pass stays on the national highway for as long as possible. The lanes in the Wassen - Göschenen section can be extensively managed thanks to the additional equipment with lane light signals. The downstream network, in particular the parallel cantonal road, will thus be relieved of traffic.

As a traffic specialist, Rapp advised on the traffic-related implementation of the Göschenen exit extension for this project and planned the implementation of the Göschenen exit extension. Rapp also drew up the traffic operating concept for the pilot operation in 2023 and for the permanent installation from 2024. Erik Schaarschmidt was responsible for Rapp in this project as deputy project manager and project employee.
