State and district roads are suffering from a massive renovation backlog. This article by Engelbach & Liebig outlines the introduction of a truck toll as a solution.

Financing bridge renovation and charging infrastructure digitally

The truck toll is intended to ensure earmarked funding for road maintenance and the development of charging infrastructure for electric trucks in accordance with the polluter-pays principle. The article shows the legal and technical feasibility as well as the economic and ecological advantages of such a system based on digital technologies.
